INTEGRATED PERSONAL DEVELOPMENT SYSTEM IPDS
The West Sussex Fire & Rescue Service will deliver a service of excellence to the community that will eliminate preventable fire deaths and accidents, making West Sussex a safer community.
Its highly trained and professional personnel will demonstrate competence in all aspects of their work, giving value for money, equality and a service delivery that will identify the West Sussex Fire & Rescue Service as a leader in its field.
The Service provides effective Fire, Rescue, and related protection services for the people of West Sussex.
We strive continually to give the highest quality of service making the best use of resources.
We will achieve these standards through the maximum contribution of everyone in the Service; for our strength is our competent, confident and caring people.
Our main functions are to save life and provide fire safety and fire prevention advice and to provide an emergency rescue service.
The West Sussex Fire & Rescue Service has 28 fire stations and 6 Fire Safety Centres as well as a network of support departments all aiming to deliver an efficient, quality service to the highest possible standards of professionalism and courtesy.
All fire & rescue services are free with the exception of those which could reasonably be expected to be provided by other agencies and which involve no risk to either life or property. Charging for these exceptions is at the discretion of the County Fire Officer.
What we do
We Fight Fires
We deal with all fires in an efficient and professional manner, using our training and equipment to keep the damage to your property to a minimum. You will also receive advice after the fire on getting things back to normal.
We Undertake Rescues
We rescue people if they become trapped, whether it be as a result of a road accident or a lift shut-in. Skilled firefighters, using the latest equipment, will be sent to deal with the problem and, working closely with other services, will keep distress to a minimum.
We Rescue Animals
If an animal is believed to be trapped we will obtain advice from the RSPCA and, if the animal is in distress, we will immediately dispatch one of our animal rescue units. All rescues, from a hedgehog to a horse, will be dealt with compassionately.
We Deal with Other Emergencies
Our fire-fighters are trained and equipped to deal with a vast range of emergencies. This includes spillage's of dangerous chemicals which endanger life or the environment, floods, aircraft emergencies and train incidents.
We Educate
Good habits never start too early, so specialist officers visit schools and groups to talk to children about the dangers from fire. As well as a structured programme of fire safety education, specialist courses are also run for youth organisations to help their members become safer citizens.
We Advise on Fire Safety
Our fire safety centres are open from 9am-5pm, Monday to Friday to provide free advice. Answerphones enable messages to be left outside of these hours. Concerns over a fire or life risk are directed to Fire Control, a 24 hour a day facility, from where an officer will be on the road within 15 minutes of notification of a possible danger to life.
