FSIS F.S.I.S Fire Setters Intervention Scheme

If you are concerned about a child/young person who plays with fire, then please read this page.

F.S.I.S -What it is

A scheme through which trained people offer guidance and re-educate young people who have shown a fascination or played with fire. The scheme is free to any parent, guardian or carer.

F.S.I.S -Who we are

F.S.I.S has a team of men and women advisers specially selected from members of the West Sussex Fire Brigade and all have been carefully trained to deal with fire play and fire setting behaviour.

F.S.I.S- What we will do

We'll make an appointment to see you and the young person to discuss the situation. The adviser will then if necessary, and with your consent, make follow up visits to complete a programme appropriate to the young persons needs.

This programme will be developed shortly after the initial visit and could include participation in basic project work at home.

Each year, dozens of young people die in fires and thousands more are permanently affected, either through injury or by loss of their families or treasured possessions.

Regrettably, many of the young people who die, do so in fires started by themselves, often through playing with matches or cigarette lighters.

All young people are fascinated by fire
and one in three will experiment with fire at some stage. For many, this will be noticed and appropriate re-education given by the parent or guardian.

However, for some this fascination can go unseen and unchecked. This may develop into fire setting behaviour which, can lead to a dangerous affinity with fire.

The Fire Setters Intervention Scheme (F.S.I.S) provides an interventional educational approach. Its advisers work with young people to change the perspective from 'fire risk' to' fire safe'.

The scheme has trained volunteers who draw on their experience of fire and its devastating consequences. They use this to re-educate young people and provide guidance to parents, guardians and other child-carers in dealing with children fascinated by fire.
