Fire Safety with Electric Blankets
Each year fire brigades are called to some 1500 fires caused by electric blankets. More than 20 people are killed and 250 injured in these fires. Many of these are elderly people. Help your elderly relatives or neighbours by making sure they know how to use their electric blanket safely.
Make sure that the blanket is laid flat. Folding or creasing can damage the wiring and cause overheating;
Make sure that both the lead and the switch/heat control hang freely and that the electric flex is not twisted, coiled, laid across the blanket or tucked under the mattress or covers.
Never use the blanket:

MAINTENANCE
Safety inspections are best carried out in the summer months when blankets are not being used.
Have your blanket inspected at least every three years by the makers or a qualified electrician.
Only wash or clean your blanket in accordance with the manufacturer's instructions.
Check the blanket periodically for detached tie strings, frayed edges, scorch marks and loose electrical connections.
WHEN BUYING A NEW ELECTRIC BLANKET
Ensure that it carries the British Electrotechnical Approvals Board (BEAB) mark of approval or the British Standard number BS3456.
REMEMBER:
Underblankets are designed to pre-heat the bed, they
MUST
be switched off while the bed is occupied.
DO NOT
be tempted into buying a secondhand blanket as there can be no guarantee that it is safe.
