WEST SUSSEX FIRE BRIGADE IN PARTNERSHIP WITH
NEIGHBOURHOOD WATCH

Background

Neighbourhood Watch has become one of the largest and most successful grass-roots movements in the country. The Association works with the local councils and is represented on the Community Safety Forums created under the Crime and Disorder Act 1998 and is specifically involved in the strategic groups identifying ways of dealing with Burglary, Vandalism and Cycle Orientated Matters as well as Reducing the Fear of Crime.

NHW is now available on the Internet. The aims of Neighbourhood Watch on the Internet are to provide members of the Neighbourhood Watch groups with on-line information to help them with their efforts.

Sussex

Throughout the county there are 9000 schemes currently in place involving 210,000, properties.

WSFB Involvement

Following approaches from the Sussex NHW Federation a meeting was arranged with East Sussex, West Sussex Fire Brigade and the NHW Federation. It was apparent that the fire brigades of both counties had a lot to gain by forming a partnership with their organisation. This provides the Community Fire Safety departments of both counties with easy access to their press and publicity network already in place. This takes the form of newsletters and information sheets of significant events, which are distributed, to all members of the scheme. It has been agreed that community fire safety messages will now be included in most of their publications.

Crime Stoppers
In addition to fire safety advice, people will be encouraged to report any issues related to possible ARSON using the Crimestoppers number .

Tel: (Freecall)

Ringmaster

Within the scheme there is a system in place to disseminate information rapidly to members in localised areas. WSFB will have access to this system providing us with a ready made method of increasing local communities awareness where there are problems with suspected arson.

HAS YOUR FRIDGE GOT THE MESSAGE?

Data Link

Datalink This is a scheme that has been put in to place in areas such as Littlehamton and other areas of Sussex by NHW.

A container is placed in the refrigerator, similar in size to a 35mm film carton, marked DATA LINK. This holds personal information on the next of kin and any medicines being used. This scheme is being adopted at steady rate countrywide, nationally and now internationally. This scheme has already proved successful and has helped to save life.

35,000 containers have now been distributed to vulnerable people throughout Sussex There are a further 20,000 containers awaiting distribution.
