Chip pan and Hot Fat safety

CHIP PANS CAN HURT, MAIM OR KILL

PLEASE TAKE CARE.

If your chip pan catches fire, don't panic! Do not move the pan.
Turn off the heat if it is safe to do so but never lean over the pan to reach the cooker controls.
Close the door to the kitchen.

GET OUT, CALL THE FIRE SERVICE OUT, STAY OUT
FIRE KILLS DON'T BE A VICTIM.
NEVER THROW WATER ONTO THE FIRE.

On average there are 16,000 chip pan fires a year- that's almost two every single hour.
Apart from the damage they cause to people's homes, these fires also injure around 3,000 people a year.

• Never fill the pan more than a third full with fat or oil.
  
  
• Never leave the pan unattended.
  
  
• Dry the chips before putting them in the pan.
  
  
• Before you put the chips in the pan test the temperature of the oil by putting in a small piece of bread.
  
  
• If the bread crisps up quickly the oil is ready.
  
  
• Never put the chips in the pan if the oil begins to give off smoke.
  
  
• Turn off the heat and leave the oil to cool.
  
  
• Never move a pan that is alight.
