Since the inception of the Search & Rescue Team in 1991, we have participated in five overseas missions. In 1996 and again in 1997, the Team sent personnel to the Caribbean island of Montserrat in response to an appeal for help following the sudden increase in volcanic activity on the island. In 1999, Team members participated in an extensive humanitarian relief effort inside Macedonia in response to the refugee crisis precipitated by the Kosovo conflict. Based at Skopje airport the mission assisted the vast airlift of humanitarian aid by providing skilled freight handling operations. The Team responded twice in the latter part of 1999 to the earthquake disasters in Turkey. In August and November teams were despatched as part of the UK Fire Services Search & Rescue Team (UKFSSRT) . These two missions were very different, both in terms of climatic conditions and the extent of the disaster situation. Working in hazardous situations both teams earned the respect and praise of the communities they had been sent to assist.
