SMOKE ALARMS SAVE LIVES

Smoke alarm Smoke Alarms are effective in detecting many of the 60,000 house fires that the fire brigade are called out to each year...but many of the 500 deaths and 11,000 injuries could be avoided if YOU look after your smoke alarm.

In 1996, there was a 30% increase in cases where a smoke alarm didn't work because the battery was missing or needed replacing.

You can buy smoke alarms at DIY stores, hardware and electrical shops, and at many supermarkets.

Smoke alarms should meet BS 5446 Part 1 and carry the Kitemark.

WHERE DO I FIT MY SMOKE ALARM?

Smoke alarms can be screwed into the ceiling and should normally be fitted at least 30cm (12") away from any wall or light fitting as close to the centre of the room, hallway or landing ceiling as possible. Always read the manufacturers' instructions before fitting.

HOW DO I LOOK AFTER MY SMOKE ALARM?

1.Once a year- replace the battery.

2.At least once a month-check the alarm by pressing the test button.

3.Once a year-vacuum and wipe the smoke alarm casing to ensure dust isn't blocking the sensor chamber.
