THE FLEET

The West Sussex Fire & Rescue Service vehicle fleet stands at 176 vehicles including all training and reserve units. In addition to maintaining the vehicle fleet, workshops are also responsible for over 300 items of plant which are carried on the appliances, most of which have their own preventative maintenance regime.

Rapier Water Tender Ladder
Function:
fire fighting, emergency special service, (Road Traffic Accidents)
Special Features: high pressure hose reels 1800Lts of water
Equipment: Breathing apparatus, hydraulic rescue equipment, chemical protection suits, light portable pump and generator.

Based at: Worthing, Horsham

 

Aerial Ladder Platform
Function:

Fire fighting, rescue, command & control
Special Features:
Computerised automatic jacking & load management system, 32 metre working height, rescue ladder.
Equipment:
Close circuit television, remote control monitor, stretcher and carrier.

Operations Support Unit
Function:
logistical support at incidents
Special Features:
Moffet Mounty fork lift truck on board
Equipment:
Catering, lighting, air shelter, generator, salvage, anti pollution, sand bags and foam as palletised loads.

Based at: Horley

Hose Laying Unit
Function:

Provide emergency main for fire fighting and flooding.
Special Features:
hose drums with hydraulic retrieval system, Moffet Mounty forklift truck on board
Equipment:
1200 metres of 150mm lay flat hose and hose fittings.

Breathing Apparatus Support Unit
Function:
Incidents requiring breathing apparatus, hazardous substances & decontamination.
Special Features:
Mobile air compressor for re-charging breathing apparatus cylinders.
Equipment:
Gas tight suits, decontamination equipment, thermal image camera, radiation and anti-pollution equipment, air shelter, ground monitors.

Heavy Rescue Tender
Function:
Special services, with persons trapped (Road Traffic Accidents), rail & air incidents, collapsed structures.

Special Features:
HIAB crane

Equipment:
Hydraulic rescue equipment, air bags, thermal cutting equipment, disc cutter, winches.

Incident Command Unit
Function:
Command & Control at large incidents
Special Features:
Expanding side to vehicle to enlarge command centre, briefing area, communication area, retractable aerial/lighting masts, computerised command and control system.
Equipment:
4 computer workstations, fax, field telephones, video camera and playback facilities.

Crew of 1-5

Off Road Fire-Fighing Vehicle, Super 'G'
Function:
Off- road firefighting, transportation of animal rescue equipment and inflatable rescue path. Dedicated fire boat transport and forward command. Also used for crew transportation to and from incidents.
Equipment:
Water tank, hosereel and light portable pump

Based at Burgess Hill

Bulk Fluid Carrier
Function:
To provide large amounts of water at an incident, a total of 17,500 litres can be carried in its large water tank. Movement of water by suction at flooding incidents.
Equipment:
Water tank, two 20,000 litre dams for water transfer, hoses and adapters

Other Vehicles in the Brigade fleet include a Crash Tender (Horsham), a Foam Tender at (Shoreham), a Water Carrier at (Littlehampton), a Command Landrover (Tangmere), Search & Rescue Team landrover (Horley) and two General purpose vehicles at Worthing and Horley.

NB: Appliances are normally replaced at a rate of 4 a year.
