Hey can anybody help?? i have been told that at 18 u can\'t become a full time Firefighter only Retained. is this true?? if ya can help can u e-mail me plz. thanks!!

Hi Danny
To join whole-time or Retained you will need to be 18 years of age.

West Sussex Fire and Rescue Service has now completed its intake of wholetime recruit firefighters. We will not be recruiting for wholetime firefighters until approximately April 2006. Further information will be made available on the website nearer to this time.

However, we are recruiting for retained firefighters across the County. If you live and/ or work within four minutes of your local station contact us on (24 hr answerphone) for an information pack. Hope that answers your question Danny.

Hi there great to be able to read of so many people with fire service connections. I was in the Glasgow Auxiliary Fire Service in the 1960s I wonder if anyone who was in the Brigade at that time remembers the days when we were based at Partick, and the South Fire station in Centre St. March 20th ( correct me if I am wrong) will be the 44th anniversary of the Cheapside St whisky bond fire disaster when 19 men died. Sad but wonderful memories of great men in the greatest Brigade in the world.

Have just finished browsing your sight for the first time, after seeing your website address on the side of a tender as they attended an incident at Butlins in Bognor, and had to say how impressed I am. Not only is it imformative on the Service and safety issues but being an enthuasiast for Fire Tenders and related vehicles, and collecting Fire Engine models and literature - including a book on registration plates for appliances around the country!, the picture gallery proved to be of particular interest. Needless to say this will not be the last visit.

Keep up the good work.

I am an English native who moved to the USA some years back. I am a volunteer firefighter/paramedic who hopes in the near future to make a career out of this lifestyle...it was funny some friends of mine were on a thatched roof fire last week and they had no idea what to do, or actually what to make of it...so i have been trying to find out what to do in this instance...so any ideas to point us in the right direction would be great? It is great to be able to compare US and UK techniques and equipment so keep this site going, I love it.

Hi Nicola

Thanks for your comments. We recently had a Thatched Roof exercise which involved different methods of dealing with fires involving thatched properties. I will contact you with some information and provide some photos for you to look at.

Thanks Lance I went to that one myself and It was a task and a half for white watch at Horsham. She started going underneath things again when rescued, so we all made a very quick exit. Anyway it was a good result, and im glad your daughter enjoyed reading all about it in the news page.Lucky I had the camera with me as well.

Great site, Great people.

I've had my workshop unit next door (same building) to your Turners Hill appliance for the last 5 years, and have always been interested in helping with "fundraising" wherever possible - like 3 years ago at Hickstead showground to help 'Firefighters Charity Fund', by providing 'pay n play' Pinball machines & other Amusement equipment
to help generate 100% charity funds, and donating my own time and expenses "FREE OF CHARGE".

However, whenever I've mentioned that I've not been asked to help at further 1 or more day events, nobody either takes me seriously or really takes any interest in helping our / thier injured & unfortunate colleagues.

Perhaps you may have 'public liability' and safety reservations?

Let me know if I can be of any future help to your splendid organisation.

Kind Regards

Keith.
